New Cars: VW's and Audi's eco-warriors
Not really eco-warriors, but rather normal models whose engine / tranmission combos have been optimised to cut fuel consumption. The engines are the 1.9 TDI with 105 hp for the Passat and A3 and a 170 hp low-pressure 2.0 petrol turbo for the A4 TFSI e. They both get longer ratios for cruising in lower revs.
These cars seem a bit apologetic next to the Prius, but given that the diesel engine is already at least as efficient as the petrol-electric hybrid, that's not really the case. And they promise to sell in much larger numbers than the expensive and bad-to-drive Lupo and A2 3L models of old.
